When the Rain Returns, Should We Encourage the Garden to Grow Again?
There are few things more welcome after a long, dry summer than the sight of rain falling on a garden. Leaves regain their colour, the air changes and plants that had seemed to stop doing anything begin showing signs of life. Fresh shoots appear among scorched foliage, lawns develop a faint green haze and flowers occasionally open at a time when we thought the display had finished.
It feels like recovery, and in many cases that's exactly what it is.
A plant that slowed down during drought wasn't necessarily dying. Reducing growth, dropping leaves or retreating below ground can all help a plant limit the amount of water it loses. Herbaceous perennials may disappear almost completely while retaining living crowns and roots beneath the soil. Deciduous trees sometimes shed leaves early because maintaining a full canopy has become too demanding. The garden above ground may look as though it's given up, while the plant beneath is concentrating on survival.
When rain returns and the soil is still warm, some plants respond quickly. Geraniums produce new foliage, phlox begins shooting from the base and lawns start growing again. Primulas may flower unexpectedly, bulbs appear earlier than anticipated and plants that normally bloom only once occasionally produce a smaller second display.
After months of brown leaves and stalled growth, it's difficult not to feel encouraged by that response. Our instinct as gardeners is often to join in. The plant has started growing, so perhaps it needs feeding. Something looks untidy, so we cut it back to make room for fresh shoots. A few flowers appear and we begin wondering whether we can persuade the plant to produce a few more.
I'd be cautious about doing too much. There's a difference between allowing a plant to recover and asking it to perform again. The rain may have relieved the immediate shortage of water, but it hasn't erased the stress of the previous months. A plant that's survived prolonged heat, dry soil and hot winds may have depleted much of the energy it would ordinarily have used for growth, flowering and storing reserves. Fresh leaves don't mean the whole plant has returned to full strength — they show it's responding to improved conditions.
Plants are also receiving several signals at once right now. Moisture and warm soil may encourage growth, while shortening days are moving the garden towards autumn and dormancy. Temperature can vary from one week to the next, but day length continues its seasonal decline. A plant may therefore begin producing soft new tissue without having a long growing season ahead in which to mature it.
That doesn't make every late shoot a problem. Many plants naturally continue growing or flowering well into autumn, particularly in mild gardens. Some late-season perennials are only reaching their best as much of the summer border begins to fade. A fresh flush of hardy geranium foliage isn't the same as tender new growth being forced from a shrub by heavy pruning and a generous dose of nitrogen — the difficulty is that we can't tell the whole story merely from the colour green.
A plant's natural response to rain is generally best left to the plant. If it has sufficient reserves and the conditions remain suitable, it will make use of the moisture. If the days shorten and temperatures fall, growth will slow again. Problems are more likely when we try to extend that response beyond what the plant would have done for itself.
Feeding is a good example. Fertiliser is often treated as plant medicine: something looks weak, so we feed it. Yet fertiliser doesn't repair drought damage, replace lost roots or remove the underlying cause of stress. It supplies nutrients, and those nutrients are only useful when the plant's in a condition to take them up and use them.
During drought, roots struggle to absorb nutrients from dry soil. Applying additional fertiliser doesn't solve the lack of water and can be wasteful or damaging. Once rain returns, nutrient uptake may resume, but that still doesn't mean every plant needs an autumn feed. Most established garden plants growing in reasonable soil contain enough stored energy and have access to sufficient nutrients to manage their own seasonal recovery.
A high-nitrogen feed is particularly unhelpful late in the year because nitrogen encourages leafy growth. That may produce an impressive burst of green, but soft new tissue needs time to toughen before cold weather arrives. RHS guidance on feeding plants warns against late-season feeding because growth produced too late may be damaged by winter cold.
There's also the question of where unused fertiliser goes. Nutrients that aren't taken up by plants can be washed through the soil during wetter weather, wasting money and contributing to pollution beyond the garden — more feed isn't automatically more care.
There are exceptions, as there are with almost everything in gardening. Plants growing in containers depend far more heavily on us because their roots can't explore the surrounding soil. Vegetable crops, greenhouse plants and plants that are still actively growing and producing may have different requirements from an established ornamental shrub in a border. Specialist autumn lawn feeds are formulated differently from high-nitrogen spring products.
The point isn't that nothing should ever be fed after summer — it's that feeding should answer a specific need rather than express a general desire to help.
Pruning deserves the same restraint. Removing completely finished flower heads or obviously dead material may improve the appearance of a plant without asking much of it. Deadheading naturally repeat-flowering plants can also allow an existing display to continue.
Hard cutting back is different. Pruning can stimulate new growth, depending on the plant and the time of year. An already stressed shrub doesn't necessarily benefit from having a substantial amount of living material removed simply because some leaves have become scorched. Damaged foliage may still be photosynthesising, and older growth can offer some protection to the crown as the season changes.
There will always be plants that need pruning at particular times for their health, shape or future flowering. An apple tree has a different pruning cycle from a dogwood, hydrangea, forsythia or buddleia. General autumn tidying shouldn't override the needs of the individual plant.
Where there's uncertainty, waiting until spring often gives us more information than cutting now. A hydrangea with crispy flower heads may look dreadful but remain alive and healthy lower down. Removing the spent flowers is one thing; cutting the whole shrub back in an effort to make it recover is quite another. What matters is whether the stems, buds and roots remain viable, and the clearest answer may not appear until growth resumes properly.
Rain itself can also mislead us. A wet surface doesn't guarantee moist soil at root depth. After prolonged drought, the upper layer may absorb enough water to look dark and refreshed while the soil beneath remains dry. Heavy rain can run off compacted ground, collect in low areas or disappear through cracks without evenly rewetting the root zone.
Before deciding that watering's finished for the year, it's worth putting a trowel into the soil and looking. Newly planted trees, shrubs and perennials remain the priority because their roots occupy a limited area. Large plants in containers may also require attention, particularly evergreens that continue losing water through their leaves as the weather cools.
Established plants shouldn't automatically be watered merely because summer has been dry. The decision needs to come from what's happening in the ground now. One garden may have received enough steady rain to begin recovering properly, while another a few miles away has had two brief showers that made little practical difference. Recovery will never happen evenly.
The return of moisture affects far more than the plants we can see. Earthworms move nearer the surface again, soil organisms become more active and slugs and snails emerge from the places in which they sheltered through the drought. Birds return to lawns and borders because food has become accessible. Fungi resume their work among roots and decaying organic matter — the garden's recovery is an ecosystem response, not merely a fresh set of leaves.
That's another reason not to rush into unnecessary work. Soil that's only recently regained moisture doesn't necessarily need to be dug, cultivated and disturbed immediately. Allowing the soil community to become active again may do more good than trying to make the garden look productive. Earthworms, roots, fungi and other organisms gradually restore movement and structure below ground without waiting for us to organise them.
There's a view that a difficult summer should be treated as a test: stop helping established plants, see which survive and use the results to decide what deserves a place in the future garden. There's some merit in that. If a plant can only be kept alive through constant intervention, it may not be suited to the conditions we're asking it to tolerate.
I wouldn't apply that principle without qualification. A recently planted tree hasn't yet had time to develop the root system that could make it resilient. A plant given help during establishment may become largely independent later. Something rare, slow-growing or personally important may be worth supporting even if it never becomes the toughest plant in the border.
Gardening isn't natural selection operating without interference. We chose the plants, altered the soil and decided where everything should grow. There's no shame in helping something we value.
The useful lesson comes from noticing how much help each plant required and whether that level of care remains reasonable. A plant that struggled once during exceptional weather may recover and perform well for many years. One that collapses repeatedly in every dry spell is telling us something different.
The final judgement should probably wait until spring. A fresh autumn shoot proves the plant's alive now — it doesn't tell us whether it's rebuilt enough reserves to return strongly next year. Equally, a plant that remains brown and apparently inactive may still emerge perfectly well after winter. Recovery is a process, not a single burst of growth following rain.
This pause gives us time to think about the next difficult summer rather than trying to recreate the one that's just ended. We can observe where extra shade would help, where soil needs improving and where plants would benefit from being moved once conditions are suitable. We can plan trees, collect and store rainwater, create ponds or rain gardens and consider how to keep more moisture in the ground.
Mulching can form part of that preparation, but timing still matters. Applying organic mulch after the soil has become properly moist helps conserve that moisture, protects the surface and adds organic matter as it breaks down. Covering bone-dry soil merely conceals the problem, and piling material against stems or trunks can create another one.
Preparing the garden for future drought is less dramatic than forcing a flush of autumn flowers. Much of it involves soil, roots, shade and water — the parts of gardening that aren't immediately showy. They're also the things most likely to determine how the garden copes next time.
The return of rain creates an understandable sense of relief. It's good to see colour returning and plants lifting themselves from the ground. We should enjoy that without assuming every sign of life requires a response from us.
Water what remains genuinely dry. Look after recent planting and anything confined to a pot. Remove what's clearly dead or diseased where necessary, but don't mistake untidiness for an emergency. Avoid throwing fertiliser at stressed plants because green growth feels reassuring.
Then watch.
The garden has spent months protecting itself from conditions it couldn't control. Now that the rain has returned, it may not need us to tell it how quickly to recover.
