Garden Notebook

Thoughts, observations and conversations gathered from a life spent in gardens.

For more than twenty-five years I've worked in other people's gardens. This notebook is where that experience turns into something else — questions, observations, the odd argument I'm still having with myself about what a garden is actually for.

A Lifetime of Gardening

What You'll Find

You won't find step-by-step instructions here — there's a whole gardening business for that. What you will find is a collection of things noticed while working: a question that wouldn't leave me alone, a garden that surprised me, a season that felt different from the one before. Some of it started as a Facebook conversation. Some of it is still being worked out.
