After twenty-five years working in other people's gardens, I've come to think the interesting question was never "what should I plant." It was everything underneath that — what a garden is actually for, and why we keep making them.
I didn't set out to write about gardens. It happened the way most of my thinking happens — a question raised on a Facebook group, an observation while weeding a border, a conversation with another gardener that wouldn't leave me alone.
Twenty-five years working in gardens taught me a great deal about plants. It's taken rather longer to work out what gardens are actually teaching us — and that's the part I keep coming back to, on the page, on the podcast, and occasionally on BBC Radio Gloucestershire.
